The South Fork of the Ogden River, Causey to Pineview.
The South Fork runs from Causey Reservoir down to Pineview along SR-39, and the public gets to it through the Forest Service campgrounds and the wide pullouts, because the rest of the bank is private. The campgrounds close in mid September, the pullouts are free all year, and the gauge near Huntsville tells you what the water is doing.

The short version
Between Causey's dam and the top of Pineview, the South Fork is a small, cold river with a highway beside it and a chain of campgrounds along it. The DWR's page is plain about the rest: private stretches with no access, and good access through the campgrounds. So that's the plan. Park at a campground or a legal pullout, fish or float from there, and stay off the fenced bank.
The campgrounds
Seven Forest Service campgrounds line the river east of Huntsville: Magpie about 5 miles out, Botts at 6, South Fork at 6.5, the Upper and Lower Meadows around 7.5, plus Perception Park Family and Willows. The season for most runs May 8 to September 13; Perception Park Family stays open to October 4, and its gate locks at 10 pm. On Recreation.gov a single site is $31 a night, a double $62, day use is $15, and an extra vehicle is $10.
When the campgrounds are closed, or you don't want to pay day use to stand by a river for an hour, UDOT's Ogden Valley site says the wide pullouts along SR-39 are fee-free, with one rule: park completely clear of the white line. That stretch of SR-39 is the same road that runs on to Monte Cristo.
The fish and the water
The DWR expects Bonneville cutthroat and rainbows here, with browns and whitefish possible. Runoff runs late March into June and the river runs high then. In winter some of the access points get plowed shut, and ice builds over the slow water in cold spells, which the DWR calls unsafe.
Tubers put in along this stretch in summer. The Forest Service requires a life jacket on every tuber, no exceptions.
The USGS gauge South Fork Ogden River near Huntsville was reading 62.5 cubic feet per second on the morning of September 29, and Causey above it was releasing 24. The place hub for the Ogden River carries the live reading, and Causey's hub carries its storage and release.
Causey right now
The Forest Service is rebuilding the roads, the parking lots and an emergency boat ramp at Causey. Its orders close the Dam Overlook Road and Skull Crack Road from May 13 through December 31, 2026, and the Skull Crack Trailhead and its roads from September 16 through December 31 for curb, paving and guardrail work, with the project running through December 2027. Check the Causey page before you plan a day at the top of the fork.
What this does to your vehicle.
The pullouts are gravel and the campground loops are dirt, so the lower panels pick up a coat of dust, and after a storm the mud on the mats has that gray canyon silt in it. Wet tubes and towels in the back leave the cargo carpet damp for a day, and river sand from the put-ins ends up in the seams of the seats. A cargo mat and a dry bag for the wet stuff keep it manageable; a vacuum the same week keeps the sand from grinding into the carpet.
