Parking for Ben Lomond in winter, from the Divide and from North Fork.

There are two ways at Ben Lomond in winter: from the North Ogden Divide, which the county can now gate shut at both ends for avalanches and bad weather, and from North Fork Park in Liberty, where Ogden Nordic's lot at the South Gate is the plowed winter parking. The Divide's own trailhead lots sit on dirt past the last houses, and what gets plowed beyond them is not something anyone publishes.

The Divide side

The North Ogden Divide is a county road, and in December 2025 Weber County was installing gates at both ends of its 4.5-mile section, one on the Liberty side and one on the North Ogden side, for about $10,000. The gates are for temporary closures when there's avalanche work or the road is too slick to be safe; the county said it had closed the road twice the previous winter to clear slides, and cited accidents and vehicles going off the road as the reason for the gates. The closures are decided with UDOT. It's a closure you can hit on the day, not a date on a calendar.

Below the top, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail's North Ogden Divide trailhead is reached by taking 2700 North to 1050 East and parking on the dirt road just past the last homes. The Pioneer Trail's trailhead is north on Mountain Road to 2750 North, where you park at the gate. Those are the two spots on the North Ogden side, and neither is a paved lot with a plow contract that we could find. If the road past the houses is not plowed, the last plowed pavement is where you park, and the walk starts there.

The Utah Avalanche Center's observers went up from the Divide trailhead toward Ben Lomond and Willard Peak on November 27, 2025 and described the terrain: north through east slopes from 7,400 to 9,700 feet and higher, patchy snow below 8,300 feet, consistent above it, with wind loading and poor snowpack structure already in play that early. They wished they had skis. That's the Divide side in a sentence: a long approach on foot until the snow is deep enough to ski, on slopes the avalanche center watches.

The North Fork side

North Fork Park in Liberty is the other way in, and it's the one with real winter parking. Ogden Nordic, the nonprofit that grooms the park's trails, parks at North Fork Park with the main area at the South Gate, and UDOT's winter page lists it that way. Ogden Nordic says it keeps over 20 miles of nordic trail and 20 miles of singletrack for snowshoes and fat bikes, and it posts a grooming report. A day pass covers the groomed trails; the county's yurts rent for $150 a night with a two-night minimum if you want to sleep up there.

We couldn't confirm from any published source what the way from North Fork toward Ben Lomond looks like in winter, so ask at the gate or read the grooming report before you count on it.

Before you go

The avalanche forecast for the Ogden zone is the first thing to read; the North Fork Park hub on this site links it and shows the snow depth at the Ben Lomond Trail SNOTEL station, at 5,970 feet. Then the cameras: UDOT keeps one at the Ben Lomond Trailhead on the Divide. If the county has closed the road, the gate will be shut and the news will say so.

What this does to your vehicle.

The Divide's trailheads are dirt roads past the last houses, so a winter visit means packed snow, mud on the thaw, and gravel thrown into the wheel wells. The road gets whatever the county's plows put down when it's open, and the county closes it when it's slick, which tells you what the surface is like on the days it's open. Skis and snowshoes go in wet and salty; a cargo mat and a bag for the boots keep the melt off the carpet. If you're parking on the plowed street below the trailhead, park like a neighbor: off the pavement's plow line, nobody's driveway blocked.
