Up the canyon, the dirt is different.
The resort roads are treated, the Pineview lots are gravel, and the South Fork pullouts are dirt.
Winter
Brine film on the lower panels and salt rings in the carpet from the Snowbasin and Powder Mountain roads, because SR-226 and SR-158 are treated and the melt off boots carries the salt inside; at Pineview the winter lots are plowed gravel and packed snow, and a wet sled and a bait bucket left overnight set a smell by morning.
Spring
Runoff mud along the South Fork, where the river runs high from late March into June and some winter access points are still plowed shut, and this year mud at Pineview's new shoreline as the reservoir refills after the pipeline drawdown.
Summer
Beach sand and wet towels from Pelican Beach and Spring Creek, gravel dust from the South Fork pullouts and the campground loops, river sand in the seat seams after tubing, and farm dust off the monastery's 1,050 acres of alfalfa and barley.
Fall
The last trips over Monte Cristo before the gate drops near Thanksgiving, on a road that is wet, sanded and salted with mud in the pullouts, and from late October the one-way work zone in Ogden Canyon on every trip to town.
